Rocking all over Paris

However French capital Paris has been quietly building a reputation for itself as a real must-visit place for great music events every year, and the discerning music fan now knows that they can see top quality live music from big-name bands and actually stay in a nice Paris hotel rather than in a flooded tent.

Attending a music festival in Paris allows the music fan to experience all kinds of different styles of music under one roof, since most of the events typically feature well-known and less-known French musicians as well as more recognisable world-famous ones. So the events are a chance to learn about some new styles of music and pick up the names of some new artists who you might then subsequently get into. Don’t worry about the language barrier since music is of course accepted as being a universal language in itself. Among the best rock and music festivals to go to in Paris are:

Solidays. This is a concert and festival which was established to help raise awareness and money for AIDS research. Almost entirely French acts populate the bill though there are occasionally a couple of British bands on show. The event lasts for 3 days, is pretty good value at 45 euro for all three days and takes place in June in the Bois de Boulogne, one of the prettiest areas of the city.

Rock en Seine. This festival has been one of the biggest success stories of the French music industry, having grown from a tiny niche event 7 years ago into a 3-day extravaganza today which features all the top acts from all over the world. Taking place in the grounds of the Chateau de St Cloud on the outskirts of the city, people who attend the event often like to stay in a nice downtown accommodationand commute out to the gig each day. Among the big name artists who played the 2009 festival were Faith No More, Keane, The Prodigy, MGMT and Madness, while this was also where new supergroup Them Crooked Vultures made their debut. The festival is a fantastic way to spend a few days in sunny August by the banks of the Seine.

Main Square Festival. Another great summer event which takes place over 4 days at the start of the month of July, the Main Square Festival is not a cheap one to attend but you do certainly get top acts for your money. The event is staged a short distance outside of Paris so attendees have the choice of whether to book into Paris hotels or camp on the festival’s site, and the 4-day pass costs 175 euro. Bands on the bill last year included Coldplay, Placebo, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and Moby.

The French have become justifiably proud of their music festival scene and it’s no coincidence that massive bands from all over the world are happy to play these fun and well-organised events. A trip to Paris in the summertime for great live music followed by Bastille day on July 14? What more do you want?
